+ The mustard seed becomes a great shrub that shelters the birds, recalling ancient images of the tree of life. We’d expect a cedar or a sequoia, but Jesus finds the power of God better imaged in a tiny, no-account seed. It’s not the way we expect divine activity to look. Yet the tree of life is here, in the cross around which we gather, the tree into which we are grafted through baptism, the true vine that nourishes us with its fruit in the cup we share. It may not appear all that impressive, but while nobody’s looking it grows with a power beyond our understanding. +

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

READINGS

Ezekiel 17:22-24

+ Tree imagery is used in a messianic prophecy to tell how the Lord will choose someone from Judah’s royal family (the cedar tree) to reign over all creation. This tree will be planted on Mount Zion, the location of the holy temple. +

The first reading comes from Ezekiel beginning at the 17^th Chapter.

²²Thus says the Lord God:
 I myself will take a sprig
  from the lofty top of a cedar;
  I will set it out.
 I will break off a tender one
  from the topmost of its young twigs;
 I myself will plant it
  on a high and lofty mountain.
 ²³On the mountain height of Israel

2 Corinthians 5:6-10, 14-17

+ Paul encourages believers to live by faith and not by sight. We do not consider Jesus from a human perspective but through the eyes of faith, believing he died for all and was raised. All who are in Christ are now in God’s new creation. +

The second reading comes from 2 Corinthians beginning at the 5^th chapter.

⁶So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord—⁷for we walk by faith, not by sight. ⁸Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. ⁹So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. ¹⁰For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil.

Mark 4:26-34

+ Jesus frequently uses parables to teach ordinary people as they are able to hear and understand. Images of sowing and growing show the vitality of God’s kingdom. +

The presiding minister (PR. JEANNE) addresses the pastor being installed.

PR. JEANNE: A reading from John: Jesus said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:21-23)

A reading from Matthew: Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

A reading from First Timothy: Set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Attend to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. PR. JEANNE: Our Lord Jesus, who came among us as a servant, calls us to faith and a life of loving service to our neighbor. You come among us as one invited to render a particular service, a gift from God to inspire us to love and good works. Analyse, in the presence of this assembly will you commit yourself to this new trust and responsibility, in the confidence that it comes from God? 

PR. ANALYSE: I will, and I ask God to help me.

PR. JEANNE: People of God, called Holy Trinity, Bellerose, in the presence of Pastor Analyse, and myself, will you commit yourselves to support your pastor in her term of service as Conference Dean, in confidence that this too is a way of serving the Lord?

Come to our aid in this Coronavirus pandemic, heal those who are sick, support and protect their families from being infected, grant access to vaccines for all. We also pray for those in need of your care here at Holy Trinity and beyond especially Bob Sarro, Kara Innella, Briana, Peter Klarman, Ruth Nouza,  Anthony Rivas-Palau, Don Kelly, Virginia Servas, Chad Aragona, Carole Zahner, Joseph Bressingham, and those we name in our hearts. God of justice, we pray for those who experience racism as part of their daily realities, who fear for their lives and that of those whom they love. May we do our part to learn about racism’s presence in our world, to accompany, and to advocate when members of your beloved community are not treated with the respect deserving of one created in your image. SUNDAY SCHOOL

Virtual Sunday School will take place on via Zoom at 11:30am. Julia Klarman will send out more information closer to that date so look out for her email. The expectation is that Sunday School will resume in person in the fall. Diane Gilroy will lead a summer program for kids over the summer. Stay tuned for more information.

It’s Flocking Season at Holy Trinity! A flock of pink flamingos have begun gracing the yards of Holy Trinity members and friends. The fundraiser supports the Holy Trinity Youth Group trip to the ELCA Youth Gathering. Contact Diane Gilroy for more information on how to flock someone’s yard or to purchase Flocking insurance!

EXITING THE SPACE AFTER IN PERSON WORSHIP

At the end of worship this morning we ask that all in-person worshipers exit the space as quickly as possible while maintaining social distance. If you would like to gather in fellowship with one another to talk and catch up it is much safer and easier to maintain social distance on the lawn than it is inside and allows us to clean up the worship space more quickly. Thank you for your help.
